Introducing yourself to what is undoubtedly a large community can be somewhat unnerving, but I have found that the best way to do it is just dive straight in. My name Is Kagweni Micheni, however due to the fact that it produces a hilarious variety of mispronunciations I am more widely known as Kagz (always with a ‘Z’, never an ‘S’). I am a third year bio-medical student about to embark on my final year project/dissertation with the very talented Anne Osterrieder, assisting with her research. The research will be investigating golgins which are proteins found in the Golgi apparatus. But more on that later, this post is primarily about me (not that I’m big headed or anything…).
Well I suppose I am your typical 21 year old bio-medical student. As cliché as it sounds, I love science. Particularly biology, I only kind of like chemistry. I love the idea that we know so much about how the body works, not just on a “this is how your digestive system works” level, but we can go deeper, look at the cellular processes, see structures of even the smallest molecules and see how important that molecule is to a whole system. And even better despite all the knowledge we have, there is still more to learn, more to discover and even more secrets to be unraveled.
Other than the science stuff, I am and possibly always will be a sitcom addict. I’m pretty sure I watch more sitcoms than would be deemed healthy. Seriously, name it and I will have seen it. I love documentaries especially if David Attenborough has anything to do with it. I love him. It is a special weird kind of love where I’m not sure if I want to marry him or if I want him to be my grandfather, but I have decided since neither options will ever be available to me, I will endeavor to be as much like him as I can.
Anyway, my weird Oedipus complex aside, over the next few months I will be working with Anne and whilst doing so keep you all informed on the research we will be doing. Hopefully I have adequately introduced myself, but if for any reason you would like to delve into the complex personality that is me, feel free to ask any questions.
